Dr. Bill Hayton sits down with FNI for 7th KM webinar

Last April 30, 2021, the Foundation for the National Interest, together with the UP Institute for Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea, with the support of The Asia Foundation and Amador Research Services, sits down with Dr. Bill Hayton for the seventh installment of the "Kwentong Mandaragat" webinar series.

The seventh webinar discussed the origins of China's nine-dash line and elucidated implications when dealing with China. The discussant of the webinar featured Dr. Bill Hayton, author of South China Sea: The Struggle for Power in Asia, Vietnam: Rising Dragon, and more recently The Invention of China - all published by the Yale University Press.

The webinar explored the origins of China’s claims in the South China Sea. While China’s claims are based on the theory of sovereignty, UNCLOS, and historic rights, there is no official explanation to these claims. Furthermore, the webinar also explored the importance of understanding reasons why China insists on claiming South China Sea, in which comprehensive strategic planning and discussions are needed.

The event was attended by individuals from the academe, government, foreign embassies, and the private sector, nationwide.
